Caring for your baby with De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis

Parenting with Wrist Pain Made Easier

What is De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis?
De Quervain’s tenosynovitis is a condition where the tendons on the thumb side of your wrist become irritated, leading to pain, swelling, and difficulty with thumb and wrist movement. It is common in new parents from repetitive lifting and holding.

Tips for Caring for Your Baby

1. Protect Your Wrists

  • Lift with your forearms, not your thumbs. Scoop your baby from underneath (like lifting a tray), avoid bending your wrists.
  • Use your whole hand. Avoid pinching or gripping tightly with your thumb and fingers. Look for alternatives to press stubs and zippers on clothing

    2. Use Ergonomic Supports

    • Wrist and Thumb braces or splints can help avoid positions that aggravate your your wrist during the day or while sleeping.
    • Supportive pillows when feeding or holding baby can reduce strain.

      3. Modify Baby-Handling Techniques

        • Feeding: Use a pillow to support your baby so your arms and wrists stay relaxed.
        • Changing diapers: Keep supplies within reach and try to do diaper changes at waist height.
        • Bath time: Use a bath seat or have someone assist to avoid awkward wrist positions.

          4. Take Breaks and Alternate Hands

          • Share caregiving tasks if possible.
          • Switch hands often during tasks to avoid overuse on one side.
